LBUSD Parent and Student Education Event: The Reality Of Orange County Teens - What Every Parent And Teen Should Know
Helping Parents Identify Symptoms of Adolescent Depression, Anxiety and Eating Disorders

Does your chatterbox son now respond to your questions with a sullen, “yes” or “no”?  Does your charming daughter not want to go to the store with you anymore?  If these scenarios sound familiar, the upcoming parent education event is an opportunity to help you understand the difference between normal behavior and behavior that may have another meaning. Learning to identify symptoms of adolescent depression, anxiety and eating disorders helps us fulfill our parental responsibility.

On Tuesday, March 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Laguna Beach High School Library, LBUSD, in conjunction with the California Youth Services (CYS), is presenting a new parent education event. The event is a part of the ongoing series, “The Reality of Orange County Teens: What Every Parent Should Know.”

Irene White, LBUSD Director of Special Education and Student Services, comments that adolescence is probably the single most difficult time for parents.  “As parents of teenagers, we want to give our teens a chance to establish their own identity, however, how do we know when they are in real trouble?  Information from experts who work closely with teens will help us learn what is natural and normal behavior and what is not.  The District is continuing its mission to create learning opportunities for parents to help navigate through the sometimes difficult teen years.”

Presenters for the event are:

  • Duane Durst, LMFT, CYS Clinical Director
  • Holly M. Viloria, RN, FNP, PMHNP-Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Event topics include:

  • Adolescent Depression, Anxiety and Eating Disorders: What to Do?
  • Identifying Symptoms and Exploring Options
  • Adolescent Developmental Stages-Healthy Transition into Adulthood
  • Resources and Recommendations

The presentation will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. In order to accommodate attendees, RSVPs to LBHS Assistant Principal, Bob Billinger at rbillinger@lbusd.org are required for this event. Parking is limited and attendees are encouraged to arrive early.
