Since 1996, the Laguna Beach High School Alumni Association has awarded
scholarships for descendants of LBHS alumni. The recipients are announced at
the high school’s Annual Honors Convocation, which is hosted by the Laguna
Beach High School Scholarship Foundation (LBHSSF) in June.

LBHS Principal Joanne Culverhouse shares her appreciation for the
scholarships, which benefit students’ postsecondary education, “Every year the
LBHS Alumni Association and the LBHSSF provide opportunities that have a
positive impact on the futures of LBHS graduates. Laguna Beach is fortunate to
have both organizations working so hard for our students.”

To help fund the scholarships, the LBHS Alumni Association raises money
throughout the year. On Saturday, May 5, they will hold their Annual All Class
Alumni Picnic from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Heisler Park. In addition to gathering and
socializing with friends and classmates, the picnic is an opportunity to donate
money for the scholarships.

One hundred percent of the Association’s revenues go to scholarships for
graduates who are direct descendants (child, grandchild, or great-grandchild) of
an LBHS graduate. Last year, the Laguna Beach Alumni Association awarded
$7,000.00 in scholarships to students who plan to further their education at a
four-year or community college, trade or technical school. Scholarship criteria
are based on achievement, character, and need. Additionally, scholarship
applicants write an essay about how the alumnus has influenced their lives.

For more information, check the Association’s website by clicking here, or via email at LagunaBeachHighSchoolAlumni@gmail.com, or leave a voicemail at (949) 497-7750 ext 5340.

LBUSD Technology Technician Long Le has been selected as the District’s 2012 Classified Employee of the Year. He is one of six Orange County Department of Education Classified Employee of the Year Finalists.

The Classified School Employee of the Year (CSEY) Program pays tribute to the tireless efforts of California’s outstanding classified school employees. The program highlights contributions of classified school employees, who support the education of California’s public school students in preschool-grade 12. Classified employees are vital to the educational team and play key roles in creating a school environment that promotes student achievement, safety, and health.

Superintendent Sherine Smith shares the District’s appreciation for Mr. Le’s outstanding contributions, “LBUSD is fortunate to have Long Le as a member of our professional staff. Long always goes the extra mile. He is smart, kind, conscientious, and diligent. Long provides technical help and assistance to each of us with patience and understanding. LBUSD is a stellar district because of employees like Long Le.”

Nancy Hubbell, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, agrees, “Long Le is a highly valued employee in the Laguna Beach Unified School District for his expertise, his ability to solve problems, and his commitment to high levels of customer service. Unfailingly helpful, courteous, and amiable, he is able to deal with complexity and to make the complex appear simple. For these reasons and more, Mr. Le has earned respect and affection throughout our school district and is highly deserving of the recognition as 2012 Classified School Employee of the Year.”

Victor Guthrie, Director of Educational Technology and Information Services, highlights Mr. Le’s dedication to the District he serves, “Mr. Le has proven himself an intelligent, hardworking, diligent and very determined professional. Mr. Le has an unending enthusiasm for education and an unrivalled thirst for knowledge. I have been particularly impressed with Mr. Le’s penetrating insight into problems that we uncover. He is a motivated and innovative individual who works with dedication and pride in meeting every deadline. Mr. Le is an extremely nice person, who communicates clearly, is very friendly, and always courteous.”

Characteristically humble about his many accomplishments, Mr. Le expressed both surprise and gratitude for the honors. A life-long learner himself, Mr. Le endeavors to teach others to use technology in an engaging and fun way. For him, the best part of his job is working with the other employees who make the District an outstanding place of education.

Mr. Le will be honored with the finalists at the Orange County Board of Education meeting May 3. On May 8, he will be recognized at the LBUSD Board of Education meeting.
