Parent Meeeting Scheduled for Common Core Standards

The parent education night will be held on Jan. 29 at Laguna Beach High School's library.

The Laguna Beach Unified School District is hosting a parent education meeting later this month to provide an overview of the district's transition to Common Core State Standards, officials reported.

The parent education night, “Transition to Common Core State Standards with a Focus on Writing,” will be held on Wed., Jan. 29 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the Laguna Beach High School library. The program will give parents an overview of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, the chance to learn about Common Core literacy, writing shifts taking place in district classrooms and about the importance of writing in all curricular subjects and how to best support their children in the writing process.

“Our teachers will be focused more heavily on non-fiction writing, as we know that the ability to write is an important skill our students will need in order to be college and career ready," said Darlene Messinger, LBUSD Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services. "Writing starts in kindergarten through shared writing where the teacher models the process, and progresses all the way through 12th grade at which time our students will be highly skilled writers.”

District officials said Common Core State Standards are a state-led effort to establish a shared set of national educational standards to "help ensure that students receive a high quality education in every school and in every state."

Anyone with questions about the event should email LBUSD K-12 CCSS TOSA Linda Barker at lbarker@lbusd.org, or by telephone at 949-497-7700, ext. 1394.
