School District Moves Fast to Name Replacement Principals

Thurston's Culverhouse to succeed LBHS's Austin, while Thurston A.P. Salberg moves up.

Following yesterday’s , the announced today that Principal Joanne Culverhouse will take his place as of the 2011-2012 school year.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be selected as the principal of ,” Culverhouse said. “The high school has received many distinguished awards, and I look forward to continuing the tradition of academic success they have experienced over the years. I also look forward to immersing myself in the athletic and visual and performing arts programs.”

Culverhouse, also a former principal of , brings 30 years of experience to the position as an administrator, teacher and coach, according to a news release from the district office. Armed with two masters degrees from the University of Nevada-Reno, she went on to earn a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has served as a principal in Laguna Beach for 12 years.

Thurston’s assistant principal, Jennifer Salberg, will fill Culverhouse’s former position. She has 18 years of experience in education, the last 12 of which she has spent in Laguna Beach at both the middle and high school levels. She has a bachelor’s in business administration and master’s in school administration.

“I believe in the core value that each student can reach their maximum potential with the support and patience of the Thurston staff,” Salberg said. “Our school’s expertise in RtI2 (Response to Instruction & Intervention) will assist us in providing all students with an equal opportunity to succeed. I am most humbled and proud to have the opportunity to serve Thurston students in this principal role.  I am looking forward to an amazing 2011-12 school year!”
