UC Irvine, Soka Rank in Top 50 in National College Survey

Among regional universities in the West, Chapman University ranked 7th, followed by California State University, Fullerton, at 35th and Concordia University at 63rd.

The University of California, Irvine, was ranked 49th among national universities and Soka University 41st among national liberal arts colleges in an annual survey released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine said in Best Colleges 2014 that UCI "offers highly regarded graduate programs with specialty offerings at the Paul Merage School of Business and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering. This public institution, founded in 1965, offers several activities on its 1,474 acre campus including numerous student organizations and a thriving Greek life."

The magazine noted that while Soka "doesn’t offer a religious curriculum and admits students without regard to religious affiliation, the founding spirit is inspired by Buddhist principles of peace, human rights and the sanctity of life. Half of the student body is international, giving SUA a rich diversity."

Other institutions in Orange County were ranked in the category of regional universities in the West. Chapman University ranked 7th in this category, followed by California State University, Fullerton, at 35th and Concordia University at 63rd.

The annual report provides students with rankings of colleges and universities that award bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The rankings are available to the public online and the print edition will hit newsstands on Sept. 24.

Ivy League universities Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Columbia took the top four positions in the national universities ranking.

In Los Angeles, a crosstown rivalry was highlighted when both UCLA and USC were tied at 23rd.
