UPDATED: Brooks Street Classic On Hold

Strong swells suddenly shrink Saturday.

UPDATED, 10:55 A.M. SATURDAY: Well, as what often happens when swells are predicted to be one thing and they turn out to be another, the Brooks Street Surfing Classic was NOT held today, as the predicted swells failed to materialize.

Damn you, Hurricane Eugene! We're no experts, but maybe the Dana Point-to-Laguna Beach outrigger canoe race happening just offshore today played a part in decreasing the wave size?

Jason Watson, manager of , says that although conditions looked good Friday, the waves this morning just weren't consistent enough to stage the contest—one of the oldest in the United States.

"Everyone wishes there was a system, but there isn't." said Watson. "We wait till Saturday morning, and if the surf is good, the contest happens, if it's not, it doesn't."

So the waiting continues ... next weekend, maybe? Stay tuned ...

UPDATED, 1:12 A.M. SATURDAY: The Brooks Street Surfing Classic is officially a (probable) go for this weekend. Brandy Faber sent out the email announcement late Friday night, but he's cautioning that final word won't be made until Saturday morning.

Here are the details: Registration will open Saturday at 7 a.m. (that's a little less than six hours from this writing), and the first heat will be in the water at 8 a.m. According to Faber, "swell is due to peak Saturday morning and slowly drop Sunday, with a back-up pulse of New Zealand swell for Sunday."

There are many divisions, including ones for boys, girls, men, women, seniors, masters, senior masters and grand masters, as well as longboards and bodyboards. Entry fee is $20 per event. And as always, this is locals only—surfers must reside within the boundaries, and proof of residency will be required. You can save registration time by downloading the entry form at this link.

ORIGINAL STORY: The , one of the world's oldest surfing contests, may happen this weekend with some help from Eugene.

That would be Hurricane Eugene, which as of Thursday night was churning off the coast of southern Mexico at a wind speed of 85 miles per hour, according to data from the Weather Channel.

Though the storm is over 1,000 miles away from Laguna Beach—and by Friday morning might be downgraded to Tropical Storm status—it could still kick up quality swells that would green-light the Brooks Street contest, which, if held this year, would be its 50th anniversary.

Brandy Faber, one of the contest's organizers, sent out an e-mail today stating that there's a "good chance" the storm will produce enough swell. However, that could change, and ultimately the call of whether or not to hold the contest won't be made until Saturday morning.
