Champion Olympic Swimmer Janet Evans is Happy in Laguna Beach

The gold medal-winner is trying for a comeback at age 40, and she just might make this year's Olympic team.

The New York Times came here recently to do a profile piece on swimmer Janet Evans, the darling of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, where the then-17-year-old won three gold medals. Years later, her feat is even more impressive, considering that the East German swimmers she defeated were later found to be doping.

Now a married mother of two, Evans and her family live in a 1930s three-bedroom cottage in Laguna Beach. She's been attracting further attention lately, ever since last month, when she qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials in June, in her signature events, the 400- and 800-meter freestyles. If she finishes in the top two in either event, she'll be heading to London for her fourth Olympics.

Pretty impressive, especially since Evans is 40 now, and since she qualified for the trials, she has to endure the occasional surprise visit from drug testers who manage to freak her kids out whenever they draw blood from her arm.
