Football: Godinez 46, Laguna Beach 24

Orange Coast League: Breakers' star running back gets held in check and their drive to the playoffs hits a speed bump.

A week after Nathan Lancaster set the Orange County record for most yards rushing in a single game, 547 against Calvary Chapel, he was upstaged by another pair of running backs. Godinez’s Ronnie Trujillo rushed for 199 yards and Nathan Jordan 145 to lead Godinez to its first Orange Coast League victory of the season.

Score: Godinez 46, Laguna Beach 24

Key Stats: Nathan Lancaster was limited to 157 yards in 23 carries with two touchdowns, of 1 yard in the first quarter for a 10-0 lead, and 4 yards in the fourth quarter to pull to 34-24. In the previous three games, he had gained 1,180 yards with 16 touchdowns.

Pivotal Moment: The first six minutes of the third quarter belonged to Godinez, and when Pedro Leon scored on a 28-yard pass from Zachary Huizar for a 27-10 lead at the 5:57 mark, it became a three possession lead. Also, with Ronnie Trujillo on the bench with an injury, the Grizzlies weren’t missing a beat. The fact that the score came on a pass instead of a run couldn’t have helped Laguna Beach’s psyche either.

Records: Godinez (4-5 overall, 1-3 in Orange Coast League), Laguna Beach (5-4, 2-2)

Notes: It was originally reported that Lancaster’s rushing record last week against Calvary Chapel in a 62-56 loss to Calvary Chapel was 552 yards. After viewing film, it was downgraded by five yards. … Trujillo carried 25 times for 199 yards and touchdowns of 33 and 3 yards in the first half, and Nathan Jordan 23 times for 145 yards and a 13-yard score in the second. … Zachary Huizar passed for 69 yards, but also ran for three touchdowns for Godinez, on carries of 1, 8 and 2 yards. … Bruce Knill gave Laguna Beach an early lead with a 24-yard field goal. ... After giving up four consecutive touchdowns, Laguna Beach pulled to 27-17 on Jack Simon's 1-yard run late in the third quarter, but Godinez responded with Huizar's second TD run early in the fourth quarter. ... Despite the loss, Laguna Beach still controls its own playoff destiny if it beats Costa Mesa next week. If it doesn’t, it still gets an automatic playoff berth if Godinez loses to winless Saddleback.
