Laguna Beach's Annika Dries Scores Twice as U.S. Water Polo Wins Bronze

The U.S. women's national water polo team captured the bronze medal today after defeating Hungary, 10-9, in the 2013 FINA World League Super Final tournament.

Laguna Beach's Annika Dries scored twice in the win, which came on the heels of the team's come-from-behind victory over China on Wednesday, propelling the squad into the medal round.

According to this report from USAwaterpolo.org:

Hungary started off the match strong leading 4-1 after the first period and 5-3 at halftime. In the third the United States offense came to life, outscoring Hungary 5-1 to take an 8-6 lead headed to the fourth. Hungary outscored Team USA 3-2 in the final period but the damage had been done and the United States was able to come away winners at 10-9. The United States picked up the win despite going 1/7 on power plays while Hungary was 5/9.

"I'm pleased with the way we battled back after a poor start," said USA Head Coach Adam Krikorian. "Overall, we leave China with a ton of work to do when we return home."

Krikorian was referencing the World Championships, which begin in late July in Barcelona, Spain.

Though the U.S. team vanquished the Chinese team in regular tournament play, China managed to make it to the finals, and beat Russia, 8-7, to capture its first international women’s water polo championship.
