Sports Report: Breakers' Palmer Named to Volleyball All-America Watch List; Water Polo Readies

Laguna Beach High setter/libero receives preseason honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. Breakers' boys water polo team looks to defend CIF Southern Section Division 3 title.

Allison Palmer, a 5-foot-9 setter/libero for Laguna Beach High's girls volleyball team and the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club, was one of eight local players among 646 from 38 states selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.'s Under Armour All-America Watch List for the 2011-12 season.

Selected as one of 12 members of the U.S. Youth Girls National Team this year, Palmer has committed to Arizona State.

Other area players include JoJo Schnabl, 5-9, S (Los Alamitos/Mizuno Long Beach); Jaylen Villanueva, 5-8, RS/S (Los Alamitos/Mizuno Long Beach); Cinnamon Sary, 5-11, S (Newport Harbor/Orange County VBC); Franki Darnold, 5-11, OH/RS (San Clemente High/Saddleback Valley VBC); Alexa Strange, 5-10, S (San Clemente/Coast VBC); Emily Moore, 5-9, S (St. Margaret's, T-Street); Ali Robinson, 5-10, MB (St. Margaret's).

In November, the AVCA will name a 24-player All-America first team and a 24-player second team. Members of the first team will be invited to play in the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match & Skills Competition on Dec. 16 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Breakers Look to Defend Polo Title

The Laguna Beach boys water polo team returns six players from a squad that finished 26-7 and last fall and has its eyes set on a repeat, according to Mike Sciacca's story in the Coastline Pilot.

Among those returning is Division 3 and Orange Coast League MVP Nolan McConnell and Erik Henrikson, who will be playing their fourth year of varsity ball. In addition, junior Riley Thomas, an All-Pacific Coast League player last season at Woodbridge High in Irvine, has transferred to Laguna Beach.
