Laguna Players Help U.S. Women's Water Polo Team Defeat Canada

The U.S. women's water polo team defeated Canada, 15-7, Thursday night at Foothill High School in North Tustin to win the best-of-three FINA World Cup qualifying series, two games to none.

Makenzie Fischer, a junior at Laguna Beach High School, scored three goals and Rachel Fattal of Seal Beach, Kami Craig and Maggie Steffens two each as the U.S. improved to 10-0 against Canada this year.

The U.S. won Game 1 of the series, 11-4, Tuesday.

The U.S. led 4-1 at the end of the first period on goals by Fischer, Steffens, Fattal and Kiley Neushul.

The Americans increased their lead to 9-2 at halftime as Fischer, Steffens, Melissa Seidemann, Jillian Kraus of Santa Ana and Craig scored in the second period.

Alys Williams of Huntington Beach, Fischer, Craig and Annika Dries of Laguna Beach scored in the third period, giving the U.S. a 13-3 lead.

KK Clark and Fattal scored in the fourth period.

The U.S. scored on two of its five of its power-play opportunities, Canada three of seven. The U.S. made both its penalty shots.

Betsey Armstrong made eight saves and Sami Hill three for the U.S.

The U.S. is the world's top-ranked women's water polo team. Canada is tied with Spain for seventh in the rankings compiled by FINA, the worldwide governing body for aquatics.

The FINA women's World Cup will be played in a yet-to-be determined city in Russia Aug. 12-17.
