New CIF-SS Football Rankings: Tritons, Eagles Each Jump a Spot

San Clemente and Santa Margarita move up in Pac-5 Division rankings, Aliso Niguel breaks into the Southwest's top 10, and voters recognize Laguna Beach's impressive start.

The football teams of Servite, Mission Viejo and St. John Bosco of Bellflower remained in the top three spots of the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division coaches' rankings, released today (Monday) by the section office, but moving up one spot each in the Southland's toughest division were San Clemente and Santa Margarita.

San Clemente (3-0) defeated La Costa Canyon, the No. 9 team in San Diego, 58-7, Friday night, and Santa Margarita (3-0) handled previously undefeated Trabuco Hills, 35-14, to become the division's Nos. 4 and 5 teams. But neither victory would have done much to elevate either squad had Bishop Alemany of Mission Hills (2-1), previously ranked No. 4, not been upset by J.W. North of Riverside, 36-35.

Trabuco Hills (2-1) fell out from among the division's "others" after its loss to the Eagles. That's something that didn't happen to Tesoro the previous week, and Santa Margarita beat up on the Titans to a tune of 39-7. Tesoro (2-1) bounced back Friday with a 27-3 victory over Chino Hills, but the Titans didn't receive enough votes this week to remain among the "others." Hmmm...

'Battle of Bay' Opponents Going in Opposite Directions

Newport Harbor (0-2) is struggling and fell from among the Pac-5's "others," while Corona del Mar (3-0), its cross-town opponent in Friday's "Battle of the Bay" at Orange Coast College, jumped a spot to No. 2 in the Southern Division rankings after rallying for 15 points in the fourth quarter to beat Western, 22-21.

The Sea Kings' Pacific Coast League rival, Beckman (1-1), reclaimed the division's top spot thanks to its 41-10 victory over Hawthorne and a 21-10 loss by previous No. 1 Garden Grove (1-1) to previously winless Woodbridge (1-2).

Also in the Southern Division, Los Amigos (3-0) moved up a couple spots to No. 7 after it 35-13 victory over Loara, and making their debut among the division's "others" are the Breakers (2-0) of Laguna Beach, who have rolled to 55-7 and 73-40 victories over Webb of Claremont and Ocean View, respevtively.

Aliso Niguel Joins El Toro in Southwest's Top 10

In the Southwest Division, El Toro (2-1) moved up one spot to No. 7 after its second consecutive big victory, this one coming over Canyon of Anaheim, 62-3. The previous week, the Chargers beat El Modena, 41-0. For the mathematically challenged, that's an average score of 51 1/2 to 1 1/2.

Joining the Chargers for the first time this season in the top 10 is Aliso Niguel (3-0), which defeated University, 34-7. The Wolverines play host to Huntington Beach on Friday. The Oilers (2-1) opened their season with a 23-21 victory over El Toro, followed with a 28-21 loss to Corona del Mar, then beat Foothill, 32-13, on Friday.

After its 42-0 loss to Cypress, Capistrano Valley (0-3) fell out of the division's "others."

Didn't St. Margaret's Win on Friday Night?

Well, if the coaches who voted in the East Valley Division poll believe that St. Margaret's lost its second game in a row by the score of 16-13, as was listed in this week's rankings, that would explain why the Tartans have an 0-2 record and fell one spot in the rankings.

However, according to MaxPreps.com and the Orange County Register, St. Margaret's beat visiting Orcas Island from Eastsound, Wash., 44-0, on Friday to improve to 1-1 on the season. Maybe that will get fixed in next week's rankings.

Sage Hill (1-2) dropped from among the East Valley's "others" after the Lightning suffered its second 36-point loss in a row, being shut out by host Mojave Friday night.

Here are this week's polls for divisions in which Orange County Patch teams (in italics) play. Last week's rankings are in parentheses.
