Ready for Some Breakers Football? Season Starts in Just Three Weeks

The team is coming off one of their best seasons ever, and several stars are returning to the squad.

What starts just three weeks from today?

Would you believe Breakers football?

Yup, it's that time of year already, as will try and match or beat last season's record-setting (and record-breaking) stats. The 2011 team became only the third LBHS squad to win 10 games—going 10-3 under first-year coach Mike Churchill—and the first since 1964 to reach the CIF semifinals, losing to eventual Southern Division champs Corona del Mar.

Though the team has lost several players to some pesky thing called "graduation," several key names from last year's squad will be returning, among them, quarterback Larry Stewart and running backs Drake Martinez and Robert Clemons.

“I don’t think anybody thought we would do what we did last year,” Breakers assistant coach Bill Douglass told Patch in June during the team's spring practice. “This year, the expectations will be higher. But that’s a good thing. We have a lot of our skill players back. We just need to get more physical. With a full year now in our weight training program, I think we will do that.”

“I think we’re going to have a very good team this season,” Churchill also told Patch in June. "We have a lot of speed, but if we can keep teams from pushing us around we should be alright.”
