Strong Start to the Breakers' Tennis Season
Submitted by Kristine Michaels:
The pre-season opened up for the Breakers on September 3, 2013 with a doubles tournament held at Corona Del Mar. The format was set as an open scrimmage between LBHS, CDM, San Clemente and Palos Verdes where all the girls got a lot of play time and the coaches were able to try out different combinations.
On Thursday 9/5 LBHS started match play against Mission Viejo at Mission Viejo High School. The players endured temperatures over 100 degrees in a match that lasted over 4 hours. The Breakers played solid in both singles and doubles. After the first round of play, the breakers came out on top winning 4 of the 6 sets. The Breakers took the match after the second round winning 9 matches with plenty of game score advantage in case of a tie. This gave Coach Davis the opportunity to move around players in the third round and experiment with his team. The final score was LBHS 12 – Mission Viejo 6.

Sweeps came from team youngsters #2 Singles – Sophomore Ashley Shelton (6-4), (6-0), (7-5) and #3 Doubles – Sophomores Natasha Keces/Ashley Fair (6-4), (6-4), (6-3) . Shelton predominately played doubles for the Breakers last season. This year, her tremendous improvement earned her the #2 singles spot. Enduring 4 hours of play in the extreme heat, Shelton represented the Breakers with a tremendous never give up attitude. Other singles wins came from #1 Singles Kira Hamilton (6-4), #3 Singles Bailey Jaeger (6-0) and new to the team at #1 Singles Anna Heitmann (7-6). Heitmann’s match seemed as though it would never end as she battled back from behind to overcome Mission Viejos #1 (7-6) and the last match on the court.
In doubles, Davis has created a strong lineup with last season’s #1 Singles player – Senior Brooke Michaels and Junior Madeline Loomis stepping in to the #1 Doubles Spot. Michaels/Loomis played solid winning both of their matches (6-2), (6-0). Other doubles wins came from #2 Doubles – Seniors Sarah Nederlander/Stephanie Tat (6-0) and the sweep by Keces/Fair at #3 Doubles (6-4), (6-4), (6-3).
