Volleyball and Music Will Rule Main Beach on Saturday

Sure, Main Beach will be busy on Saturday with the annual Fete de la Musique headquartered right there on the bricks. But before the music kicks up at 1 p.m., the morning will be all about knocking balls around.

That's because, come 9 a.m., it's the 58th annual Laguna Open two-man beach volleyball tournament, which in April got a significant goosing-up of support by the Laguna Beach City Council when they vowed to find ways to rebuild the event back into something close to what it was in the 1980s, when the top purse was $150,000. (Saturday's payout will be a comparatively paltry $2,000).

Mike Sciacca of the Coastline Pilot has more on the history of the tourney, as well as what some Open players have done elsewhere .... think colored medals handed out in far-off foreign lands.
