Hoop du Jour! Basketball is Back at Main Beach

After more than seven months of inactivity, the famed basketball courts at Main Beach will reopen Saturday.

For Main Beach basketball junkies, the wait is almost over.

The renowned basketball courts at Main Beach, where some of the greatest basketball players in the country have come for pickup games, will reopen this Saturday. The chain link fence surrounding the courts is expected to be removed between 1 and 2 p.m., according to Tom Toman, Laguna Beach Recreation Supervisor.

The courts have been closed since mid-October so the city could replace an underground sewer pump station. The nearby lifeguard headquarters and public restrooms soon will be closed so the remaining lift station construction can be completed. The irrigation was renovated and sod installed around the courts.

The two half-courts are the same dimensions and are made of the same latex surfacing as before, but the color is different: green with blue trim out-of-bounds and in the key. The white, dotted three-point arc is about collegiate distance. New backboards and 10-foot rims also have been installed.

So let the three-pointers fly and the dunks thunder. Basketball is back at The Beach.
