Olympics Viewing at Susi Q, Arts Commission Seeks Artists, and More

2012 Olympics: Watch History Being Made! – The 2012 Olympics will be televised at the Susi Q weekdays beginning Monday, July 30. What could be more fun that watching your favorite events with friends? Cheer for your favorite athlete, keep track of the medal count and even watch our hometown hero, Annika Dries, center forward on the US Women’s Water Polo team, compete for the gold! (As a youngster, Annika participated in the City’s water polo classes coached by Chad Beeler and went on to star at LBHS). The Olympics will be broadcast in the multi-purpose room on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon (schedule is subject to change). Look for a special appearance at the Susi Q by Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball player and 2016 Olympic hopeful Whitney Pavlik, also from Laguna Beach, during one of the beach volleyball events!

Main Beach Playground Equipment Replacement Q & A Sessions – City Staff will be holding two informal question and answer sessions to discuss the replacement of the Main Beach playground equipment, scheduled for construction in Fall 2012. The sessions will be held at the Main Beach playground site on Wednesday, August 1 at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday, August 2 at 3:00 p.m.

New Building Official - Dennis Bogle will be the new Laguna Beach Building Official starting on Monday, July 30. Mr. Bogle was most recently with the City of Newport Beach as the Chief Building Inspector/Manager for three years; prior to that he was Mission Viejo’s contract Building Official for nine years. He has a B.A. degree in Public Administration, an A.S. degree in Architectural Design Drafting and an A.S. Degree in Building Code Technology. Dennis has many building code related certifications, including CALBO & ICC’s Certified Building Official, ICC’s Certified Plans Examiner and ICC’s California Plans Examiner, ICC’s CALGreen Inspector and Plans Examiner and CASp’s Certified Access Specialist. 

Nyes Place Landscaping - The landscape island at the corner of Nyes Place and South Coast Highway was recently renovated by City crews. The irrigation system was renovated and 300 plants were replaced. The irrigation heads were replaced with low flow water conservation heads. The Beautification Council applied for and received a $2,500 grant from the Laguna Beach County Water District to pay for the water conservation elements.

Laguna Plein Air Painters Reception at City Hall - An exhibition titled “Dedicated to Painting the Landscape” presented by the Laguna Plein Air Painters 2012 is currently on exhibit at City Hall. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 5 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through August 17, 2012.

Artist Open Studios - The Arts Commission is currently accepting participants for the 2012/2013 Artist Open Studios. Held on the first Saturday from October through March, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. this self-guided tour includes free parking and trolley service from Act V, 1900 Laguna Canyon Road. Artists wishing to participate should contact Siân Poeschl, Cultural Arts Manager at spoeschl@lagunabeachcity.net. This program is funded by the lodging establishments and City of Laguna Beach.
