Cutting Through Waves at the Victoria Skimboards Championships

Men and women carved their skimboards into the waves at Aliso Beach during the Victoria Skimboards World Championship over the weekend.

Like kinetic sculptures, athletes on Saturday and Sunday jumped onto their boards at the Victoria Skimboards World Championship of Skimboarding at Aliso Creek, sped into oncoming turquoise waves, turned at just the right moment, and produced an ostrich plume of sea water behind themselves.

Sam Stinnett of South Laguna Beach did it the best, winning the pro men's division.

On the beach, hundreds of spectators watched the best in the world compete, which at times proved difficult. Wind conditions and a difficult trough at Aliso provided only a couple of dozen tasty swells. But the audience was thrilled when they finally got to see muscle and grace combined with the beauty of the ocean.
