World AIDS Day to be Commemorated Thursday at Main Beach

World AIDS Day will be commemorated this Thursday at Main Beach, with a public reading of names of Laguna Beach residents who have died from the disease, HIV testing, and a display of several panels from the Orange County AIDS quilt.

The event will also extend throughout the city, with several public sculptures draped in black ribbon, which is meant to pay tribute to artists and creative types whom AIDS has claimed, as well as serving as an allusion to World AIDS Day's origins as A Day Without Art.

Some of these sculptures will include "Council," on the corner of Loma and Forest; "Voyager" in Treasure Island Park; "Shopper" at Ocean and Beach; and "Breaching Whale" in Heisler Park.
