Zero Trash Laguna Collects a 5 with 3 Zeros

The volunteer cleanup army is awarded a $5,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful and Waste Management.

has received a $5,000 Think Green grant from Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful.

The grants are given to beautification, cleanup and recycling projects nationwide, according to Michelle Clark, community relations manager for Waste Management in Orange County.

Zero Trash Laguna founder Chip McDermott began his monthly First Saturday Cleanups in October 2007. Waste Management provides a 35-gallon trash cart and 64-gallon recycle cart at each of McDermott's eight adopted cleanup areas.

To date, Zero Trash volunteers have collected more than 60,000 pounds of garbage and recyclables, Clark said.

Clark presented McDermott with the grant check on Saturday in front of Avila's El Ranchito, one of his adopted cleanup spots.
