An Update on Laguna's New Burger Spot, Including a Name Change

Urbun Laguna is out, BurgerFi is in. Plus, some menu clues!

Urbun Laguna, the burger restaurant slated to open this spring in the old Kentucky Fried Chicken space on Coast Hwy., has undergone a name change.

The new moniker is BurgerFi, says owner David Mainiero, which makes perfect sense since Mainiero’s father co-owns the BurgerFi brand name. There are three BurgerFi restaurants already operating in Florida. The Laguna Beach location will be the first in California.

“Being part of the BurgerFi family now in more ways than one has granted me a much larger audience for the concept that I had originally intended for Urbun in Laguna Beach,” Mainiero tells Patch. “BurgerFi shares the vision I had for Urbun in terms of its emphasis on natural, locally-sourced food and sustainable construction, practices, and products, but also provides me a platform to make a much larger impact with these ideas because of the size and resources of BurgerFi.”

The website for the existing BurgerFi locations—"Burgerfication of the Nation" is their slogan—reveal some intriguing menu clues for the Laguna locale, among them an In-N-Out-esque, not-so-secret  “secret” menu that features “alternative style” burgers and fries.

Mainiero says he hopes to begin remodeling the KFC space in about three weeks, with a targeted May or early June opening.
