LBHS Students Arrested for Allegedly Smoking Heroin on Campus

Editor's note: The following story was published on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 8 a.m.

Two female students were arrested last week at Laguna Beach High School after a school official allegedly found them smoking heroin in a bathroom stall, authorities reported.

Just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 the two female students, ages 16 and 17, were arrested after officials found them smoking heroin and in possession of .31 grams of the drug, Laguna Beach police Sgt. Louise Callus said.

After being arrested, the students were released to their parents.

In a letter to parents sent yesterday, LBHS principal Joanne Culverhouse addressed the "disturbing incident" that came to light when a teacher noticed one of her students took too long to return to class after she went to the bathroom. The teacher called a campus supervisor who found the two girls in the bathroom.

"I can only imagine how alarming this incident must be for you as parents, as it is for me and my staff," Culverhouse said in the letter. "I encourage you to speak to your children regarding this incident and instill the severe impact that drugs and alcohol can have on their lives."

Culverhouse did not confirm if the two students faced any disciplinary action as a result of the incident, but said the case appears to be isolated. She also said school officials are taking steps to ensure the safety of all students which include the development of a Text-A-Tip hotline for students, parents and community members to anonymously report information, suspicions or rumors that would be a risk to student safety.
